  • The ABCs of Furniture Restoration

With more free time, you decided to restore this wooden chair that spent several seasons in the garage. Why not? Whether you are stripping a chair you found at a garage sale, dyeing an old dresser or painting old kitchen closets, be sure to protect yourself and others around you during the process. Whether you are just giving a coat of paint, or restoring it from scratch, be sure to keep these tips in mind before you begin your restoration project. Read the labels and follow all safety and use instructions indicated on the label. Knowing how to dispose of any remaining products is essential. Working in a well-ventilated area is just as important. Restore old furniture outside if the weather permits it. If you work indoors, open the windows for proper ventilation. Do not use sanders, heat guns or torches. This could create dust and fumes containing lead. Paint strippers also contain potentially harmful substances, so use them carefully. Ideally, choose a paste, which you can apply with a brush. Keep children and pregnant women away from the work area to make sure they are safe. Always wear goggles, gloves and a respirator. The product label will give you more detailed information about the personal protective equipment you should use. It is essential for your protection and that of your family. Store materials properly. Be sure to store catering chemicals in a cool, dry place. Keep all hazardous materials out of reach of children. Dispose of all catering waste properly. Throwing away rags, paint cans and other materials used to restore furniture can be extremely dangerous. Apart from the fact that they can start a fire, they can cause serious damage to the environment. Understand what you are using. Whether it's paint, caulking or even a window cleaner, use chemicals as directed. Follow all safety and operating instructions on the label, including how to dispose of any remaining product.
